The firm Bausch & Lomb were commissioned in the 1930's to produce high quality
eye protection for the American Army Air Corps. By 1936 they had manufactured
a polarised lens fitted into a light 'pear drop' shape spectacle frame to maximise eye
protection at high altitude, the famous 'aviator' sunglass was born.
By 1937 these sunglasses were available to the public and marketed as Ray-Ban aviator
sunglasses. The other famous model and possibly the best selling sunglass in the world is
the 'Wayfarer'.
The Wayfarer, available since 1953 has, along with the Aviator become a design classic
and their continual appearance in films such as Top Gun, Blues Brothers, Risky Business,
Men in Black and Reservoir Dogs has ensured their iconic status.
